Vintage chairs à la Tolix, iron, worn down paint, lovely patina, France, 1960
It took me around four years to buy these chairs. They stood in the garden of a fellow antiques trader and I just loved and love them. And every time I had been to visit him I, around four times a year, I ended the visit with the words: "If you ever want to sell those four, just give me a call". And a couple of days ago, thàt telephone call finally came. Like a firetruck, I raced to his place, to buy them. Before he changed his mind again.
But luckily for me, he did not change his mind, since the chairs were frowned upon by visitors. They were afraid the white Sundays best would get spoiled by the state of the chairs, with flaking paint and rust in places. My first thought was: why didn't you just put some pillows on the chairs?. But I did not voice that thought, so as not to bring him on any ideas and endangering the buy or sale, if you wish. Pay up, load up and I sped away.
And if you have similar concerns, you can of course paint them, but I think that some of the charm will get lost along the way. So put a pillow on the seat, do not wear white, do not sit on them in white trousers when wet and I think you will be okay.
They are not marked Tolix, so these are old copies of the original design. And yes copy's and rip-offs of design were happening for ages, so also in the sixties, Relax man.
They can be shipped, but depending on where you live, I have to ask a quote for shipment. So if you want to buy them, just let me know and I will find the cheapest way to get them on your doorstep.
Dimensions: back height 94 cm, seating height 48 cm, seating depth 40 cm, seating width 37, with of the chair overall 41 cm.
