As if I was lost and had landed myself in an episode of "Midsummer Murders", but than without the murder and in the Netherlands. It was that picturesque, the village that I found myself in when I bought this lion.
I bought it from an contractor that had to demolish an old rectory in Brabant. So I am entering this picturesque little village, driving on this lovely road, with large trees on the side, the branches of the trees almost touching the sky, no asphalt but stone pavement and old farms and villas lining the road. Breathtaking. So I arrive in the middle of the village and my navigation directs me towards this nice old church. I turn up the drive way and go around the back. And what do I see????
Complete chaos, rubble, shovels, skips, destruction every where. Progress had reached this little village as well, resulting the demolition of the rectory to make way for apartments.
And the contractor tried to salvage what he could, including this lion. Has spent his live in the garden of the rectory for as long as the people present could remember. And the memory went back to the start of WWII.
Has been painted numerous times and lost its paint numerous times as well. So this time no statue of a saint from a rectory (to be honest, they were already sold) but a lion. But still, it comes from a rectory, so it has been blessed and that gives it a bit of saint hood. So let's call him Saint Lion.
