Antique polychromed wooden Madonna with child, hand carved, on new stand, South America (probably Mexico), around 1820 -1840
| Availability: | In stock |
These statues were brought to the New World by the "Spanish friends" to spread the Catholic faith among the wandering souls there. They were hand carved, often adorned with beautiful clothes and crowns. They were used to explain the stories of the Bible to the "ignorant."
This Madonna has glass eyes, but has lost her crown and clothes, and Baby Jesus has lost his hands. The Madonna does still hold a beautiful cross in her hand. But unfortunately, an elephant has also stepped on one of her feet—her left foot, to be precise. The toes are completely gone there.
You can see various (very old) repairs, because these statues were cherished by their owners. So they rather repaired them than replaced.
Dimensions:
height (including stand): 29 cm, without stand: 28 cm.
wide at its widest: 10 cm.
A beautiful example of religious folk art from bygone eras.
