The arrival of this garden urn — or rather olive jar — and its companions in the snow caused quite a stir on Instagram. I rather mischievously suggested that these pots, having travelled all the way from the deep south of Spain, were thoroughly traumatised by both the journey and their first encounter with a Dutch winter.

It turned out to be my most-watched video ever. You can still find it on my Instagram, should you wish to see it.

That was back in January, but only now have the first two of this illustrious trio made it into the webshop. It took me a little while to get them ready for sale. This one, in particular, had a large crack which some barbarian had “repaired” using Bison Kit (yes, really). I carefully took it all apart and reassembled the pot properly. You can still see where the damage was — but that feels only honest. It is also missing a small piece along the rim (do have a look at the photos). An old imperfection, and one that comes with it.

Its beautifully pale colour is, I imagine, the result of age, moisture, and years of drying in the sun. After nearly a century exposed to wind, rain, and relentless heat, the porous terracotta has, in places, begun to gently wear away.

It is a truly beautiful piece — gracefully aged, though therefore also somewhat fragile. I would not recommend leaving it outside during winter, certainly not with a plant or water in it when frost sets in. It has survived nearly 100 years — a civil war, a world war, and the wild seventies. If you choose to take it home, it will be up to you to see it safely through the decades to come.

It cannot be shipped by regular post, but for a small and reasonable fee, delivery to your home can be arranged. Or, of course, you are very welcome to collect it from the warehouse — always a pleasant visit.

Dimensions: height 68 cm, planting hole diameter 29 cm, widest diameter 44 cm.
