Antique tall narrow single-door cupboard, France, circa 1890
A cupboard for those who understand that something doesn’t have to be wide to do its job properly.
Slim of build, but surprisingly spacious inside. Fitted with seven shelf supports and currently holding six shelves. So yes, there’s room to adjust things a little, depending on what you want to put in it. Or hide away. That works too.
She has lived. Painted once, then again, and again, as tends to happen with ‘ordinary’ French furniture. Nothing remarkable, just used as it should be. At some point, someone decided part of it should be finished in blackboard paint. You may have an opinion on that. I suspect the person who did it was rather pleased with themselves at the time.
On the back, one of the early owners has written her name. In that elegant, old-fashioned French handwriting. I find it rather sweet. As if someone from a hundred years ago is quietly popping up to say: “peekaboo, I was here first.”
A cupboard that simply does what it is meant to do. No fuss. In the hallway, kitchen, sitting room or on the landing, wherever you have the space and could do with a bit more order.
Not perfect. Not pristine. Here and there even a proper bit of flaking paint. I rather like that.
If you find the current paint, with the blackboard section and the flaking, a bit too much, I can scrape it back for you. No guarantees what will appear underneath, but more often than not it turns out rather well, maybe a touch more rustic. Or I can repaint it for you. Not for free, I’m afraid — but I assume you weren’t expecting that.
